Using online social networks for marketing is different from traditional marketing tactics. It’s not just a matter of getting your message out to as many people as possible. This is akin to spamming. The main distinction between traditional online marketing and marketing on online social networks is that effective online network marketing involves relationships. It is not just a matter of pushing your message; it’s a matter of having a conversation or relationship with your audience.

Having said that, you may wonder who is your audience. Is it anybody and everybody who will listen? Not exactly. Although you should strive to increase the size of your network, you must keep in mind that you must target influencers within your market. Those people who blog or write, content producers, frequently are more likely to generate buzz about your organization than those who are content consumers. The content producers are the leaders of online networks. You want the leaders on your side.

In short, don’t turn down somebody who friends you on an online network like Facebook or MySpace, the two largest network communities. Go ahead and add people who want to be your friends, if they take up too much time and don’t provide any value for you, you can unfriend them later. Keep in mind that amongst those friends you add, there may be an influencer or two who will recommend your product or service to others. If you have a system that targets influencers, then you will have used an online network to its fullest potential.

Having said all that, it is vital that your interactions with your online friends are genuine. As soon as you come across as fake or not genuine, whatever goodwill you may have generated will flip into an equal amount of ill-will. Keep it personal and keep it real.

Social networking is one of the many ways through Web 2.0 to make your business go viral. It includes sites like Facebook and MySpace, as well as tons of niche sites devoted to specific topics. What all of these sites have in common is that they are in some way interactive.

At the same time, social networking does overlap with certain elements of Web 2.0. Sites like YouTube, a video sharing site, allows you to build a profile, post comments on videos, upload your own videos, and even allow others to subscribe to your channel.

When planning to make your business go viral using social networking, you first need a plan. Choose which social networking sites you want to market on.

I recommend not signing up for more than three to five. If you want to get the best results, you will need to focus your efforts on only a few sites. This will help you get the best results.

One thing to remember is not to limit yourself to sites like Facebook and MySpace. YouTube is an excellent site to join, especially if you like video. There are others like Hi5 and Friendster that are similar to Facebook and MySpace. Because they attract different demographic groups, you have an opportunity to extend your reach online for free.

Once you have chosen the sites you want to market on, sign up for your account. Most of these sites are free. Complete your profile. Add as much information about yourself and your business as you can. Privacy is an important issue, and you want to protect your privacy.

If you intend to make money on the internet though, you will have to sacrifice some of your privacy for the sake of credibility. This doesn’t mean to tell everyone everything about yourself. Just provide enough information to show that you are a real person.

The next step is to get out and “make friends.” When making friends on any of these sites, the most important thing you want to remember is to choose people who share common interests, as well as business interests. You don’t want to waste your time connecting with those who aren’t interested in the products or services you sell.

The third step to marketing on these sites is to get out there and participate. Just putting up a profile simply isn’t enough. You need to get involved. Look at ways to go viral on the site. Depending on the type of sites you have chosen, all it may take is a video, the right free report, or an application.

It’s very easy for you to go viral on these sites simply because there are so many ways to do it. How you choose to do it is up to you.

The use of social media websites for marketing is growing fast. However, this is new ground for many marketers and, as it matures, certain legal issues will emerge. In this article, I look at a few potential legal pitfalls and how to avoid them.

Because social network marketing involves the publishing or broadcast of online content, many existing, traditional media law apply to content on social media websites.

Copyright is the big one, with “fair use” on the forefront. Copyright law protects any type of content whether it is text, audio, video — whether or not an actual copyright statement exists on the content. To keep yourself safe, always quote sources. Even if you don’t use a statement word-for-worth, it’s better to attribute statements to known sources.

Services such as CopyScape offer website owners and web content providers the ability to check their writing against other content on the web. But, it won’t check older, or archived, content that doesn’t exist on the web. Just because content has been checked with CopyScape doesn’t mean it wasn’t plagiarized.

These same standards apply to trademarks, logos, literature and art. Your motto should be “When in doubt, source it out.” Be aware also of “deep linking” to content, whether pictures, logos, or other material.

If you link to content which looks like it might be misconstrued as belonging to you, you could be in violation of copyright laws. Not to mention stealing bandwidth.

Another potentially problematic area is disclosure and confidentiality. You need to be careful about what you write about your own business and competitors. Revealing information about the business transactions of your clients or competitors could land you in very hot water. When you perform a transaction with a client, it’s assumed that you will hold client information confidential. Leaking confidential information can be very damaging to a client or competitor—not to mention your own reputation.

Any media law expert will tell you that one of the biggest dangers when publishing or broadcasting are defamation and libel. If you are writing anything about an individual, especially if it is controversial, you must check that all facts are correct before publication. In fact, even if you are repeating something libelous that you saw written elsewhere you can have legal problems. The best advice? Don’t do it. Stay away from anything that hints of trouble.

If you use social media websites like FaceBook and MySpace, be aware of privacy issues. While it is perfectly ethical to use social networking websites to spread your message to people who are genuinely interested, many people game the system. Like email spam, social networking spam is becoming a huge problem. Don’t be surprised about future legislation on this issue.

Social network marketing is still in its infancy so many legal issues have yet to be flushed out. The bottom line is that if you’re communicating on social media sites, and you’re not attempting to circumvent ideas or privacy, you shouldn’t run into any legal trouble.

Are New Age Media shaking up Old Values? The internet is creating cyber shockwaves in all facets of our lives. Including your 2nd lives…. so to speak. Look to Youtube, Facebook, MySpace, SecondLife to name a few, and in fact you could already be members of one or more of them. Below is a synopsis of each with statistics which hopefully will convince you the efficiency of such channels.

Facebook. This is a free-access website allows users to join one or more networks, such as a school, place of employment, or geographic region to easily connect and interact with other people. Users can post messages for their friends to see, and update their personal profile to notify friends about themselves. The website has more than 69 million active users worldwide and ranked 7th in Sept 07. It is the most popular website for uploading photos, with 14 million uploaded daily.

MySpace. This is a popular social networking website offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music and videos for teenagers and adults internationally. The 100 millionth account was created on August 6, 2006 in the Netherlands and a news story claimed 106 million accounts on September 8, 2006, and the site reportedly attracts 230,000 new registrations per day.

YouTube. This is a video sharing website where users can upload, view and share video clips. It uses Adobe Flash technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video content, including movie clips, TV clips and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video-blogging and short original videos. In November 2006, Google Inc acquired the company for US$1.65 billion in Google stock. In July 2006, the company revealed that more than 100 million videos were being watched every day, and 2.5 billion videos were watched in June 2006. 50,000 videos were being added per day in May 2006, and this increased to 65,000 by July In January 2008 alone, nearly 79 million users watched over 3 billion videos on YouTube.

Second Life (abbreviated as SL) is an Internet-based virtual world launched in 2003. A downloadable client program called the Second Life Viewer enables its users, called “Residents”, to interact with each other through motional avatars, providing an advanced level of a social network service combined with general aspects of a meta verse. Residents can explore, meet other Residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, have virtual sex, and create and trade items (virtual property) and services from one another. At the end of March 2008, approximately 13 million accounts were registered, although a large percentage of these are inactive & some Residents have multiple accounts. In January 2008, residents spent 28,274,505 hours, so on average about 38,000 residents were logged on at any particular moment.

What actually do you see in common? You see social-centric sites which attempt to create communities via word of mouth. Each site offers unique and compelling reasons for you to become members of their respective communities with each site sharing different values and beliefs.

It uses what we might call a viral marketing approach which taps on the social networks to increase brand awareness of the site with the eventual goal to market or sell a product. Viral marketing is in essence, the power of word-of-mouth approach exemplified by the networking effects of the internet.

The most compelling reason of all, that as true marketers you should note in the above information, is the massive amount of traffic generated within these sites which serve as great business opportunities which you can’t afford to ignore.

Here is a parting note to all marketers. At the end of 1st quarter 2008, simply by count of the above major social networking platforms, there is a massive 270 million users (but assuming duplicate accounts in various site) giving rise to viral marketing potentials.

Food for thought to you, imagine being able to capture simply 0.1% of that count for your business.

I read recently that Twitter now has 10 million people using it worldwide. It is one of the fastest growing social networks today and is starting to have an enormous impact on how internet marketers are networking and doing business online. There are many celebrities also using Twitter and they have a huge following amongst their fans.

So what exactly is Twitter?

Twitter is a social media service that describes itself as “a way for people to connect through a quick exchange of ideas”. The messages are referred to as tweets and they cannot be longer than 140 characters maximum and you can basically discuss anything that enters your mind. All the conversations start with the phrase “what are you doing”? But your messages don’t need to be only about what you are doing.

The messages that appear on Twitter can be seen by anyone who visits your page. Anybody who follows you will be able to read the messages you post. When they log into their own page, anything that you might have to say will show up there as a tweet.

You can also send private messages to people on Twitter who have chosen to follow you, and this is quite a useful tool for anyone involved in an internet based business.

The big advantage with a social network service like Twitter is that you can very quickly build up a network of contacts, and you can keep them up to date on all your business activities. You can post information that can be helpful to others and keep people entertained with any insights or tips you may have. If you want to get more visitors to your blog, you can post the links to your articles on Twitter. In fact whenever you update your blog you can automatically send a message to your Twitter followers that there is a new blog post for them to read.

An important point to remember though is that Twitter is actually a social media site, so don’t go overboard with self promotion. Just keep in mind that people apart from promoting their internet businesses are there to make friends and chat to others within the Twitter community.

If you spend too much time on self promotion you will very quickly lose whatever following you have built up.

It is very quick and easy to sign up for a Twitter account, all you need to do is log in to twitter.com, click on the Get Started – All you are required to do is complete the form online. Then just click on create my account and you are ready to begin tweeting.

Initially I would suggest that you begin building your network by finding Twitter users that you can follow. There is a “find people” button, click on that and you will be able to run a search for anyone that you know or may want to follow.

When you find someone you would like to follow, simply click on their name or avatar and click the “follow” button that will appear on the next page.

Many of the people who you choose to follow, will return the compliment and follow you back and before you know it you will have built up a list of followers. So the more people you follow the bigger and faster your network will grow. One point to remember is that you cannot add more than 200 new followers to your network in a day. If you want to have more than 2000 people following you, you will need to follow at least 2000 as well.

It is important to observe the rules listed above and as long as you do, you can build a large network of followers. But break the rules and you will be banned by Twitter. Twitter is a social networking site, but it is a great way to build your business as well.

Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites and it has millions of registered users. With this in mind it is no wonder that individuals and businesses use it to make money and boost their profiles. So what can Facebook marketing be used for?

Facebook ads are one of the most obvious forms of marketing on this social networking site. These can be custom made to suit any business and users can specify the type of user they want to see the ads. Marketing of this kind can be very successful as it targets the people who are most likely to respond to an advertisement.

Polls can also be a great way to market a business. Anyone can create a poll of any kind and get Facebook users to complete it. These can then have a click through at the end to the businesses site.

Businesses can also use Facebook to send emails to all of the users they are friends with. Using this can be much cheaper than paying for a mass email service and it is becoming a preferred method of marketing. Emails sent in this way are also not going to be caught by spam filters, so they get straight to the recipient.

Information can also be posted on the Facebook wall of a business, thus providing free marketing for that business. Such information can be seen by everyone who accesses the business’s page and can reach a huge audience in very little time.

As shown Facebook marketing is a very cost effective (and cheap in some cases) way of getting information to thousands of users. It is fast, easy to arrange and can get some amazing results for the individuals and businesses that use it. Add to this the fact that Facebook accounts can be set up in moments and it is clear why it is so popular.

A lot of people online want to know how to use Facebook for marketing and advertising. Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites with over 250 million users who actively use it. Stats show that an average user on Facebook has nearly 125 buddies. Even though there are other competitive social networking sites, Facebook strives to have its own loyal users all over the world. Since there is so much traffic on this website, a lot can be done to make use of it to earn income. Hence, Facebook stands to be one of the best platforms to not only market but also to sell the products and generate good income.

In order to use Facebook for marketing and advertising to earn income, one should make sure that he or she has a good and an active profile that will be only used to market products and nothing else. Hence, it is advisable to make use of a new profile rather than using your regular Facebook profile. One of the most preferred ways of advertising any product on Facebook is to run ads. These ads can be used to target relevant users by age, education and geographic location. However, these ads do not come for cheap.

This is a known tendency that people usually buy from those people whom they now. Hence it is very important to market your products properly. The key is providing the users with the products and services on Facebook by marketing and advertising. This way you can earn when ads show up on Facebook or when there is sale of any products or services. One of the best ways to promote any products online is through affiliate marketing. The online merchants may ask people who own websites or blog to advertise or promote his products. After this, the person who has a blog or a website places an ad about the products and services offered by the online merchant. If there is any sale, the blog or website owner gets commission.

Like affiliate marketing, two-tier affiliate marketing is also one of the best ways to earn income steadily. Two-tier affiliate marketing can significantly improve the business of the online merchant. He not only gets increased traffic but also finds increase in the sales. Here is how it works. All you need to do is to affiliate with an online merchant.

The next step is to introduce more affiliates to the online merchant who are not direct affiliate but are sub-affiliates under you. You can then earn through the commission that is produced when there is any sales done by any of your sub-affiliates. The more sub-affiliates you introduce, the higher profits online merchants will make and more you will earn through the commissions.

If you don’t have a great deal of money to dedicate toward marketing your blog but you do have plenty of time, social networking is a great way to boost your traffic while also building a community with your blog. In fact, one of the great things about social networking is that it can really help you build a solid reputation within the community of your target audience while also helping you build-up the popularity of your website.

There are many ways you can go about conducting social networking, but the basic premise behind this marketing method is to get out there and interact with others so they will want to come check out your blog. One common method of social networking is visiting blogs that seem to be targeting the same audience as you. Take some time to get to know the blog and its community, then start making your own comments and participating in the discussions. Each time you leave a comment, you can also leave a link to your blog. If the members of that blog community like what you have to say, they will likely click on your name in order to learn more about you.

You can use the same type of technique with forums. With forums, you may be able to set up your account so your forum log-in name is linked to your blog. If not, you can include a link to your blog in your signature. That way, your link appears every time you leave a message on the forum and, once again, those whose interest you pique will click on the link and visit your blog.

Video websites such as YouTube also provide you with great opportunities for networking. If you create humorous videos, instructional videos or informational videos that become popular on the website, you can potentially bring a great deal of traffic to your blog. In fact, any time you create a video to post on your blog, you should also post it on sites such as YouTube in order to get even more use from your video and to increase your chances of reaching more readers.

Sites such as MySpace and Facebook also provide opportunities for social networking. By interacting with those communities on a regular basis, you can build relationships with other people that might be interested in reading your blog.

The key to successful social networking is to leave comments that are meaningful to the blog or forum you are visiting. Simply saying something such as “Great post!” is not going to be enough to draw in traffic. Rather, take the time to build relationships with the communities you find at these sites and you will soon find them coming to your blog to interact with you there as well. Also make sure you visit each site of the person who left a comment on your site.

Following these tips will help you gain valuable and loyal visitors to your website and that is the key to social networking.

Social network sites in some cases can be considered the ‘duct tape’ of the global communications community. What had once hit the internet scene as an online ‘location’ for the ‘younger’ generation to communicate socially is now big business.

Combining with the technology of the internet and connecting global online communities, these sites are now recognized for their ability to attract large audiences. The ability to communicate thoughts, ideas, news, or other forms of information within and amongst these various online communities around the world 24/7 couldn’t be ignored.

The popularity of these type sites stem from their ‘casual’ structure which in turn attracted the masses that today are captivated by the many social networks online.
Of course it didn’t take long for marketers ranging from 5th Avenue down to small ‘mom and pop’ entrepreneurs to realize and harness the potential and power of these sites.

Social network marketing has uncorked a completely new mindset and direction for both the mainstream and small-time marketers. The emphasis on relationship marketing is a strong indication of the unilateral shift in this ‘internet age’ marketing mindset.

The acceptance and embrace of social networks have now spawned sites that cater to an older generation as well as those that focus on working professionals. Whether discussing health issues, current events or business strategies these type sites have revealed an AWESOME POTENTIAL.

Social network marketing today is quickly becoming the online marketing approach of choice due to its ability to develop more personal and long term relations with customers. This relationship marketing really harkens back to ‘the day’ when a handshake could ’seal’ a deal. The value of trust has now been rediscovered on the internet. The irony here is the internet was once considered the MOST impersonal way of communicating since interpersonal contact was minimized due to the technologies involved.

Online marketing seemingly has turned the corner with the increasing use of these type sites as a favorable platform on which to implement many business strategies.

Growing steadily in use, popularity, and sites, social networks are casting a larger shadow on the internet horizon. Both the business and communication potential these sites possess has now been identified.

Whatever your reasons or purpose may be social network sites seem to be the easiest and most effective means to spread the word. From an online marketing perspective, the growth rate and potential customer base these sites offer is undeniable, too tempting to pass up, and by no means should not be ignored!
